There are more benefits to having a financial plan than you may realize. A comprehensive financial plan can help you balance today’s needs with your goals
for the future, adapt to changes in your circumstances and needs, prepare for unexpected emergencies, experience peace of mind, achieve your life goals and
much, much, more!
A financial plan can help you achieve your goals but make sure you are getting your advice from a professional: someone who is qualified, understands you and your goals, and has demonstrated the competence and ethical judgment required to take on the responsibility
of helping you build your financial future.
Relationships matter!
Talking about your finances is a very personal thing. You need to be able to build a relationship with an advisor you can trust; one who understands your unique situation and goals, and who can work with you over time to accomplish them.
You also need to be open and honest with your planner.
If you hold back and don’t give them the relevant financial information, they can’t build you an effective plan.
"Financial planning, involving some of the most important issues in your life, is a deeply personal service and requires a solid, trusting relationship."
UNDERSTAND THE BIG PICTURE Each decision you make may affect other areas of your life.
PLANNING IS ABOUT BALANCE Financial planning is not about denying yourself today for some distant tomorrow. Planning for tomorrow allows you to live for today.
SET MEASURABLE GOALS Set specific targets that will help you achieve what you want, when you want it.
BE REALISTIC – Even with a financial plan, you are unlikely to see all of your financial problems solved overnight.
RE-EVALUATE PERIODICALLY Financial planning is a dynamic process. Your financial plan will need to be reviewed and updated regularly to take life changes into consideration, and ensure you remain on track.
BE INFORMED Know what to ask from your financial planner and what to expect from the engagement.
Setting specific savings goals will help you to begin saving money. When you are just putting money into the bank on a regular basis, it can be easier to withdraw it for various reasons or overspending, and using some of your money earmarked for savings is easier to justify.
For these reasons, it is important to be saving for a specific reason. You may be working towards several goals at once, or you may be focused on a specific goal that you want to meet.
>> Focus on Retirement
First, you should work on saving fifteen percent of your income towards retirement. You can build up to this gradually, through pay raises, but fifteen percent will help you to retire comfortably
>>Save for Emergencies
As you are increasing the amount you contribute to retirement, you should be saving up an emergency fund of six months worth of income.
