IT'S A TRAP!

By Wouter Snyman

The quickest way to catch a mouse is to give him cheese (and a trap!). MONEY CAN BE A TRAP! Many people talk about the “money trap”, this is a trap that makes those hard-working people toil away for 40 to 45 years under the illusion that they can then retire. This trap explains the idea that trading time for money is good.

One might think that finance is logical and sensical but let me tell you it’s not… finance is EMOTIONAL and psychological! This “abundance mindset” buzzword has been all over the internet. What does it really mean and why should you care?

Whether you’re rich or poor – we all face some of the same problems. Let’s call them LIFE PROBLEMS. These include things like finding true happiness or love, feeling true fulfillment or purpose etc. Money won’t solve these problems. BUT. When you are poor – over and above these general LIFE problems, you also have MONEY problems – such as, how will I pay for rent, food, healthcare etc.

Your financial life is very similar to the life of a race car driver, did you know that? A race car driver is an athlete that physically and mentally prepares for the big race. When he gets there, it’s adrenaline, skill, keeping his cool and doing his job WELL. This is JUST LIKE FINANCE. You need a plan – just like the race car driver maps out his race, accounts for every turn and corner.

Whether you’re an avid baker or one that wouldn’t bet their life on the rise of a cupcake – we hope that this metaphor makes sense. It starts with an intention – the desire to smell freshly baked farm-bread or cookies in your home. This represents the outcomes you desire from your money, the luxury spends, the holidays and moments your money can create for you.

When I analyse my life, my picture and my finances, what perspectives and thoughts dictate my emotions and my actions? Is there the BELIEF that I could be richer, a millionaire or even a billionaire? Choosing your proper nouns.

By Wouter Snyman

PROPER NOUN DEFINITION: A proper noun is a noun that identifies a single entity and is used to refer to that entity, such as London, Jupiter, Sarah, or Microsoft, as distinguished from a common noun, which is a noun that refers to a class of entities (normal things). When we were young and at school our English teachers used to teach us that a proper noun is a word used to NAME something. It’s branded. It’s important. It’s a stand-alone concept. You capitalise this word, to give it meaning as a proper noun and not just another common thing.

Goals achieved. Such a simple statement, loaded with so many expectations and complexities. At attooh! we believe that your financial journey should and could be one of celebration, if your goals are set and achieved realistically. With that being said, the year of 2020 has flipped finance, the economy and humanity on its head. Our “goals” have suddenly become those “new years resolutions” that only last for a week. Success has become temporary for many. Stress and anxiety has taken over. We have heaps of empathy for those that have suffered throughout 2020 wishing our clients, stakeholders and our country well for 2021.

Now more than ever, we must understand that our knowledge is only valid/useful until the next pandemic hits. WE NEED ADVISORS. WE NEED GUIDANCE. WE NEED EDUCATION. WE NEED A STRATEGY FOR A CRISIS.

OCTOBER 2020

Many South Africans have a plan in place to cover funeral expenses when a loved one dies because most families do not have a large enough emergency fund available to cover the cost of a funeral. This is a good way to indemnify family members from funeral debt when a loved one dies, however, there are many other costs associated with dying for which little planning is done. The expenses do not stop after the funeral. You probably want to ensure that your family will be able to cover all these unexpected costs after your death.

When you die, your bank accounts may be frozen and your family will have limited access to money. But they will still have to cover the basic expenses, such as your funeral, travel expenses, grocery purchases, and any other immediate expenses related to your death.

Liquidity after death, especially when the breadwinner dies, can cause a family to struggle to cover the daily expenses. You need to make sure your family has access to cash in the days and weeks after your death.
